Paris Packing List: What to Wear in the Most Style-Conscious City in the World

The anxiety about dressing for Paris is mostly unfounded. Parisians are not standing on street corners judging tourists — they're going to work, eating lunch, and living their lives. What they do value, however, is the appearance of effortlessness. Looking like you tried too hard reads as foreign. Looking like you simply dressed is the goal.

The practical guide: pack fewer, better things.

The Parisian Wardrobe Logic

Paris operates on a capsule wardrobe principle by default. Classic pieces, neutral palette, one or two statement items, nothing excessive. This translates directly to how you should pack.

What reads as "dressed" in Paris: tailored trousers, a clean blazer, a quality scarf, leather shoes, a well-fitted trench coat.

What reads as tourist: trainers with formal clothes, overly branded items, very casual everything, visible sportswear outside of running.

Clothing

Spring/Autumn Paris (April–May, September–October)

The best seasons to visit, with unpredictable weather requiring layering.

Tops: 3–4 quality basics — a Breton stripe tee, a plain white shirt, a light blouse or elevated t-shirt. Stick to navy, white, and one other color.

Bottoms: 1–2 pairs of tailored trousers or well-fitted jeans (dark wash). Avoid distressed denim.

Layers: A trench coat or structured blazer. This single item elevates every outfit beneath it. If you bring one extra thing to Paris, make it a good coat.

Evenings: Paris restaurants range from smart casual to formal. One slightly elevated outfit — clean trousers, a nice blouse or shirt, leather shoes — handles dinner at bistros and brasseries.

Summer Paris (June–August)

Lighter fabrics: linen trousers, light dresses, breathable tops. The same capsule principle applies. Bring a light cardigan for air-conditioned museums and cooler evenings.

Winter Paris (November–March)

Layer properly. A good wool coat (worn on the plane) is your most important item. Underneath: merino base layers, quality knitwear. Paris winters are cold and damp but rarely severe.

Footwear

Walking is how you experience Paris. You will walk 10–15 km on active days — Montmartre to the Marais, the Seine to the Left Bank.

The right shoes: leather sneakers (clean, minimal), quality loafers, or ankle boots. These work for daytime walking and evening restaurants.

What doesn't work: flip flops (too casual everywhere), heavy hiking boots (unnecessary), very high heels (cobblestones are the enemy).

Bring two pairs maximum. Wear the heavier pair on the plane.

The Scarf

If there is one item that makes a Paris outfit, it's a scarf. A simple linen or cotton scarf in a neutral color adds a layer of intention to any outfit, keeps you warm in museums, and takes up almost no space.

Pack one. Wear it often.

Practical Considerations

The Paris Metro involves significant stair-climbing and turnstiles. Heavy rolling luggage is not the move. If you fly into CDG, a carry-on backpack or small wheelie makes significantly more sense than a large checked bag.

Pharmacy culture is strong in France. Any toiletry, medication, or skincare item you forget is available at the pharmacie on the corner, often in better quality and at lower prices than home.

Tap water is excellent in Paris. Bring a water bottle and fill it anywhere.

What to Buy There

Paris is a city of markets, concept stores, and boutiques. Leave deliberate space in your bag for:

  • Books from Shakespeare and Company
  • Produce and cheese from any marché
  • A small ceramic or print from a gallery
  • Anything from the pharmacie that you've been recommended

The best souvenir from Paris is usually something you didn't plan to buy.
